A mattress topper: when it fixes the problem and when it does not
A topper is often bought instead of a new mattress. Half of those purchases are money wasted.
A topper is a thin mattress several centimeters high, which is placed on top of an existing bed. In the catalog, it is placed in a separate segment, and this is not a coincidence: it solves a different problem than a mattress.
What does he really do?
Corrects stiffness. The mattress seems too hard - a topper softens; too soft - a hard topper tightens. This is the cheapest way to change the feeling of a sleeping place without changing the mattress itself.
The second scenario is a folding sofa or an old base, where you need to level the feel of the surface, and there is nowhere to put a full mattress.
What he doesn't do
Does not treat sagging. If the mattress sags in the middle, the topper will follow its shape - you will lie in the same hole, only through an additional layer. Only replacement works here.
Doesn't add support where none exists. A topper a few centimeters thick cannot distribute weight like a block twenty high.
Topper or mattress pad
These are different things, and they are constantly confused. A mattress topper is a thin cover that absorbs moisture and dirt and is washable. It protects, but does not affect the hardness.
The topper changes the feel, but needs protection itself. Most often, the correct answer is both: the topper under the mattress.
How to understand that you need a mattress, not a topper
- —A depression is visible when viewed along the surface from the side
- —Waking up with lower back pain, not just feeling "stiff"
- —The two of you jump to the middle
- —The mattress is more than eight or ten years old
