A mattress for a child: what really matters

An adult chooses a mattress by feel. For a child, feeling is the worst possible criterion.

The child likes soft. This is the worst guide when choosing a mattress, and the only time when the opinion of the future owner should be put aside.

Why harder?

While the spine is forming, you need a flat surface that prevents the body from sagging. The soft mattress bends under the pelvis - the hardest part - and the spine lies in an arch all night.

That is why coconut coir is so often found in children's mattresses: it is a hard layer that does not sag under weight and keeps the surface flat. It happens on one side or on both sides.

Springless is usually more appropriate

For a small weight, the spring block almost does not work like a spring: the child does not create the load for which it is designed. A springless block of layers gives more even support and does not lose anything.

Read the guideline for hardness in the line "Hardness" - there is a summary for all layers, not for one coconut layer.

Size: for height, but not too much

The length of 190-200 cm serves until adulthood, and buying a shorter mattress "while you're small" means buying it twice. But it is usually not worth changing the width of 90 cm to 120 "for height": the bed will eat up the room in which the child needs to play.

Measure the mattress by the inner perimeter of the bed frame, not by its outer dimensions. A gap of more than a centimeter on each side is a displacement of the mattress and faster wear of the corners.

A mattress pad is not an option here

In a children's bed, it performs the main work: it absorbs moisture and pollution, it can be removed and washed. The removable cover of the mattress itself has to be washed many times less often, and washing the cover is a whole day procedure.
