What bed size to choose: 90, 140, 160 or 180
The size of the bed is not one number, but three: the sleeping place, the size and the passage around.
In the characteristics of the bed is "Bed 160x200". This is the size of the mattress. The bed itself is bigger, and the room needs even more — and it is this difference that is most often mistaken.
Three numbers instead of one
- —A sleeping place - a mattress is bought for it
- —The overall size is the sleeping place plus the frame, usually 8-15 cm on each side
- —The passage is at least 60 cm from the side from which you stand up
What does each width mean?
- —90 cm - single: teenager, guest room, second bed in the nursery
- —120 cm - one and a half bedrooms: spacious for one, cramped for two
- —140 cm is the minimum for two, if both are small and sleep soundly
- —160 cm is the standard for two, the most common choice
- —180 cm - spacious for two, can withstand a child or a cat in the middle
Length
The standard is 200 cm, and it is enough for a height of about 185 cm. Taller people should look for 200 cm as a minimum and check whether the length of the headboard with a soft overlay does not eat up.
Check by room, not catalog
Take the overall size from the specifications, not the sleeping position, and lay it out on the floor with masking tape. Then walk around as you would every day, on both sides and past the closet.
The 20 cm wider bed provides significantly more comfort at night and significantly less space during the day. This is an honest exchange, and it must be done consciously.
The mattress is separate
Measure the inside perimeter of the frame, not the outside dimensions of the bed. The mattress should fit tightly, without gaps of more than a centimeter on each side: otherwise it will shift, and the corners will wear out faster.
