Coconut coir is pressed coconut fiber. In the mattress, it works as a hard layer: it does not sag under weight, does not spring and keeps the surface flat.
Hence two typical scenarios. The first is a children's mattress, where a flat, hard surface is needed while the spine is forming. The second is an adult who needs a rigid base. Coconut is available on one or both sides of the mattress, as well as in combination with latex or polyurethane foam - this is indicated in the characteristics.
Questions and answers
- Isn't it too harsh?
- It depends on how much coir is in the mattress and what lies next to it. A thin layer of coconut over the spring block only removes excessive softness, a solid coconut mattress is really firm. Focus on the line "Hardness" in the characteristics - there is a summary for all layers, not one for each.
- Is coconut suitable for a child?
- This is why it is most often taken: while the spine is being formed, a flat hard surface is more appropriate than a soft one in which the body sags. See the size and final stiffness in the characteristics of a specific model.
